Mayne Island Conservancy: Volunteer Broom Removal Event

The Mayne Island Conservancy’s next and last volunteer broom removal event of 2012 will be at Henderson Park, Mayne Island, on December 5th from 1pm-3pm.

We will meet at the parking lot by the kiosk. If you are unsure of how to get there please let us know. This is a great chance to get to know/enjoy Henderson Park and have some interesting conversations, all while getting some exercise. If you haven’t fulfilled that 2012 New Years resolution to pull some broom, now is the time to do it!

Christmas Bird Count

The annual Galiano Christmas Bird Count will be held on Sunday, December 16. Our count is part of a very large citizen science project in which tens of thousands of birdwatchers around the world participate in organized counts of local birds on one day between mid-December and early January. Christmas Bird Counts have been going on for more than 100 years. The data collected are submitted to the Audubon Society and Bird Studies Canada.

Caring for the Western Purple Martin

Western Purple Martins almost disappeared from the south coast of British Columbia Martin due to losses to their preferred breeding habitat (cavities in trees) as well as competition from introduced bird species such as starlings and house sparrows. The Western Purple Martin Stewardship program was launched to try to restore and increase the breeding populations of these magnificent birds. On Mayne Island Herbie and Bernard Rochet took up the challenge in 2005 establishing artificial nest boxes in Miners Bay and Bennett Bay.
