Surviving Progress - Library Movie Night

Mayne Island Library presents a public screening of the National Film Board's "Surviving Progress", 7:30 pm, Friday, October 5 at the Agricultural Hall.

Ronald Wright’s bestseller "A Short History of Progress" inspired this cinematic requiem to progress-as-usual. Throughout human history, what seemed like progress often backfired. Some of the world's foremost thinkers, activists, bankers, and scientists challenge us to overcome progress traps, which destroyed past civilizations and lie
treacherously embedded in our own.

Blue Carbon, Climate & the Oceans Presented by Colin Campbell

Carbon stored in the natural sinks of coastal oceans is secure for millennia, and the conservation and restoration of the associated ecosystems could account for up to 10% of the emissions challenge.

Dr. Colin Campbell was born and raised in Melbourne, Australia where he trained in Zoology and Palaeontology, spending the late 60's and early 70's at the University of California Berkeley, acquiring his PhD.

Rainwater Harvesting @ Page Dr. Lounge

Has the dry September got you worried about future dry wells? Robin Keating and Adam Schauer will talk about the latest developments in rainwater harvesting. These two know everything there is to know about the subject - Robin persuaded the Nanaimo Regional District to give a subsidy to homeowners who converted to rainwater, now he is going to try talking to CRD. We are lucky to get such talented and busy people to come, let's give them an audience.

At Page Drive Lounge (opposite the Firehall) at 1 pm.
