JOB POSTING – EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATOR (ECE)
This is an exciting opportunity to be part of building Galiano’s first licensed non-profit daycare from the ground up. The Early Childhood Educator (ECE) will play a role in the formation of this new program, working with the management team to develop policies and determine the direction of the daycare.
The Galiano Activity Centre has partnered with the Gulf Islands School District to launch a pilot childcare program this fall at the Galiano Community School. The curriculum will be child-focused, with an emphasis on nature and play-based learning.
Galiano Island is a unique rural community located approximately 1-hour ferry ride from both Victoria and Vancouver. The new daycare will be located in the supportive and inclusive community at the Galiano Community School, as well as nestled in a spectacular natural setting. The ECE reports to the Daycare Manager and provides the necessary support, resources and leadership to ensure the provision of safe and nurturing care to young children in a group setting, in accordance with the goals and curriculum plans of the daycare, and in strict compliance with the BC Childcare Licensing Regulations. The ECE will very often be the sole caregiver for up to 8 children.
Principle Duties & Responsibilities:
Demonstrates nurturing care and plans developmentally appropriate activities to meet the needs of children in a group setting within a safe and healthy environment and in cooperation with parents, colleagues and community professionals.
Provides for the physical needs of children including diapering, toileting, feeding, napping and medication administration as needed.
In collaboration with the manager, ensures positive communication with families through regular verbal and written contact.
Maintains all required records and logs for licensing purposes.
Early Childhood Education diploma or degree
Experience working in Early Childhood Education
Valid Standard First Aid and current Level “C” CPR.
Negative criminal record check.
Superior interpersonal skills and proven ability to work closely with team members
Sensitivity and respect for individual and cultural differences
Adequate energy level and ability to meet the physical demands of the job
High commitment to high quality programming for children and a supportive work environment for staff
Excellent problem solving skills and conflict resolution abilities.
High degree of initiative and dedication.
Position Start Date: May 1, 2017 (subject to funding).
Hours: 8 hours weekly through August, work schedule to be determined; then 26 hrs/weekly.
Must be available Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Position expected to start May 1.
